ORGANISATIONS AND PROJECTS IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER
GCIM: Global Commission on International Migration in Geneva was a project founded by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2003. It ended in 2005. Its purpose was to enhance transnational cooperation on migration on a global level, in order to develop a coherent, comprehensive and global response to migration. It addressed governments, transnational bodies, and civil society actors. It was carried out in close cooperation with the United Nations.
IGC: Inter-Governmental Consultations on Migration is an informal, non-decision-making forum for intergovernmental information exchange and policy debate on issues of relevance to the management of international migratory flows.
ILO: International Labour Organization is an international organization based in Geneva (Switzerland). It conducts research on issues related to work and labor and provides a platform for exchange as well as advice to policy makers. It also has a department dealing with migration issues in the context of work.
IOM: International Organisation for Migration is a large international organisation with offices all over the world and headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland). It is funded by its 125 member states. It is devoted to promoting the humane and orderly treatment of migration, enhancing international cooperation and searching for practical solutions. The World Migration Reports published by the IOM contain a chapter on irregular migration.
International Metropolis Project: a forum for bridging research, policy and practice on migration and diversity, for fostering academic research on policy-relevant aspects of migration, and for providing the results to governmental and non-governmental actors. It is located in Ottawa (Canada) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).
OECD: Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development is an international organisation located in Paris (France). It provides research and statistics on economic and social issues and supports governments in 30 countries in exchanging their experiences, developing solutions for policy problems, identifying new strategies and coordinating policies.
OSCE: Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe is the world?s largest regional security organisation with 56 member states and 19 missions or field operations under management. Its headquarters is in Vienna (Austria) , where a department deals with human trafficking. OSCE offers a forum for political negotiations and decision-making in the fields of early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation.
PICUM: The Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants is a non-governmental organization that aims to promote respect for the basic social rights of undocumented migrants within Europe.
UNODC: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is an United Nations organisation that promotes multilateral partnerships to combat “problems without borders” and to respond to the rising challenges of drugs, crime and terrorism in the context of a changing world.
